Ukraine Missile attack on Crimea results in three fatalities and over a hundred injuries

Sevastopol, a city and naval base on the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula, faced a devastating missile attack from Ukraine on Sunday. The attack resulted in the deaths of three people, including two children, and injured over 100 others.

Casualties and damage

Fragments from the intercepted missile struck beachgoers in Sevastopol, causing the tragic casualties. Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev confirmed the deaths and added that a total of 124 people were injured, including 27 children. The attack hit Uchkuyevka, a popular area with sandy beaches and hotels.

The Russian health ministry reported the injuries, and videos on social media showed people fleeing the beach and carrying a stretcher. The authenticity of these videos could not be verified by AFP.

The Russian defense ministry accused Ukraine of using US-supplied weapons and cluster munitions in the attack. They claimed that Ukraine launched five missiles, with four being intercepted and the fifth exploding in the air. The ministry labeled it a "terrorist attack on civilian infrastructure."

Local news reported that an elderly woman was killed while swimming, adding to the tragic toll. The Russian investigative committee has opened an investigation into what they are calling a terrorist act.

The attack on Sevastopol follows a pattern of regular strikes on the city since its annexation by Russia in 2014, but Sunday's incident was notably severe.

Broader conflict

This attack came shortly after a Russian strike on Kharkiv, Ukraine, which killed two people and injured over 50. Another strike in Kharkiv on Sunday killed one person and injured five. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's Belgorod region killed a man and injured three others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for increased support from allied countries to step up attacks on Russian territory, emphasizing the need to stop Russia's actions.
